Development Phase

Aquarray

Aquarray's DMA technology opens the door to new paths in personalised medicine. Due to the extreme miniaturisation of the test volumes, a few cells from biopsy material are sufficient to test the efficacy of various drugs in parallel on the patient's own cells. This is not possible with current methods due to the significantly higher material consumption.

Currently, there are over 200 approved cancer drugs in Germany alone. These often include several drugs approved for the same indication. In medical practice, the problem arises that it is not possible to predict which of the possible drugs has the best chance of success in a particular patient.

This makes possible a patient-specific therapy of cancer by selecting the most effective drug therapy. This enables individualised therapy and increases the chances of successful treatment response and helps to avoid side effects due to the use of ineffective drugs.

Cerefort

Mitochondria, the "powerhouses of the cell", are the primary source of metabolic en-ergy. Mitochondrial activity and efficiency is known to decline during a lifetime and is thought to be the component principally responsible for the ageing process. Maintaining mitochondrial function helps people to enjoy an active life and longer lifespan and, with an appropriate life style, may reduce susceptibility towards certain diseases.
Based on research by Max-Planck scientists, Cerefort develops functional food products based on compounds that have a beneficial effect on mitochondrial integrity and function - supporting cellular fitness.
A first product named Mitobene with a high D-lactate content has been developed based on a patented fermentation process. This means, that in addition to a high D-lactate content, the beverage has all the health beneficial advantages of fermented foods. The product allows convenient uptake of an amount of D-lactate equivalent to consuming 1 kg of Bulgarian yoghurt in a concentrated form.

NanoLockin

NanoLockin is developing, producing and selling instruments for nanoparticle and fine particle analysis by their heating due to light absorption using Lock-in infrared imaging. Nanoparticles are present in a large variety of industrial applications (e.g. medicine, food industry, cosmetics) and fine particles are an environmental problem due to increasing traffic and industrial activity.

One core activity is the development and commercialisation of an easy to use, affordable and mobile device to measure on site the health-damaging effect of toxicological active fine and ultrafine particles as the most critical component in polluted air in cities, in industrial surroundings and at workplaces. The toxic effect of these particles is increasingly subject to research in human health risk assessment studies due to its deep penetration into lung tissue and cells

The innovative aspect is the usage of the NanoLockin technology to investigate interactions of particles with human cells and the direct assessment of the toxicological impact on these cells. This is enabled by the combination and miniaturisation of several existing components, such as a cell culture cartridge and the NanoLockin unit, and new components,  such as a toxicological assay to enable the measurements on-site without the need of toxicological measurements in off-site laboratories.

Ocius Diagnostics

The EVA system as a fluorescence-based biosensor technology is exploiting the optical phenomenon of evanescent fields for selectively exciting bound fluorophores and measuring the biochemical reaction in real-time. The competitive advantage is rapid point-of-care-diagnostics directly at the doctors without any expensive equipment.

The EVA biosensor system consists of an instrument, the small and robust EVA reader, and a disposable measurement device, the EVA chip. The single-use EVA chip allows the measuring of almost every parameter that can be targeted by an antibody or any other molecule with specific interaction and is pre-loaded with all necessary reagents.

This innovative technology allows the realization of affordable and easy-to-use diagnostic systems that are around 10 times faster, require less manipulation steps, and can be performed with one third of the reagents used in conventional ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) tests – with similar sensitivity and specificity.

Sanaplas

Sanaplas develops biomedical drugs, based on human serum. Our approach to treat dry eye disease (DED) takes benefit of the fact that serum has a composition similar to natural tear fluid. One major reason for the occurrence of DED is the age-related decrease of the IGF1 level in the tear fluid. In Europe 16 million patients are estimated to be affected by moderate to severe forms of DED, which are   characterized by inflammation and infections and resulting damages to the cornea. Despite numerous DED-treatments on the market, such as moisturizing eye drops or anti-inflammatory drugs, so far only symptomatic treatment can be achieved with the current treatment options resulting in a high unmet medical need. Our development project (Allogeneic Curative Serum - ACS) has a high healing potential, repairs the ocular surface cells and restores   the altered tear film homeostasis by substituting natural components.

Triterp

Natural products form the biologically relevant subset of the chemical space, having evolved through natural evolution for a variety of applications. One such class of natural products is triterpenoids, which are one of the most diverse classes of natural products, have been used for centuries as active ingredients in essential oils and Chinese medicine, and are of interest in many industrial applications ranging from low-calorie sweeteners to cosmetic ingredients and vaccine adjuvants.

TriTerp is focussed on the development of a patent-protected yeast technology platform to produce triterpenoids. The triterpenoid production with yeast provides many advantages and there are numerous applications of triterpenoids used in many industries.

TriTerp’s yeast platform opens access to chemical space of triterpenoids with estimated 20,000 molecules. Typical examples are Betulin, Betulinic Acid, Dammarenediol, Erythrodiol, Lupeol, Oleanolic Acid, Protopanaxadiol and Squalen.

Evaluation Phase

Project AS

There are certain molecules that mitigate the effects of alcohol consumption. There have been numerous products on the market for many years, but they have only shown limited effectiveness. One reason is the low stability of the active compounds. In this evaluation project, active substances with better efficacy and higher stability are evaluated with regard to their commercialisation prospects.

Project BM

Within a large research project biomarkers have been identified that make it possible to determine the biological age of people. However, they were not translated into commercially applicable diagnostics methods. The possibility of developing an affordable product for measuring biological age and realistic business models are currently being examined.

Project CP

Recent research shows some clear health benefits of coffee and the aim is to develop innovative coffee products (e.g. coffee with a higher content of healthy active ingredients due to improved production methods or addition of coffee related healthy compounds extracted from coffee). In this evaluation project, active substances are evaluated with regard to their commercialisation prospects.

Project CO

This evaluation project investigates formulations based on growth factors against periodontitis. The efficiacy and safety of these formulations have to be validated. Other aspects within this evaluation project are the costs of the active substances and a better understanding of market access and acceptance by doctors and patients for the final product.

Project LD

The phenomenon of lucid dreaming, in which an individual has the ability to be conscious and in control of theirdreams, has attracted public attention. Scientific research has verified the phenomenon of lucid dreaming and various substances are discussed to induce lucid dreaming. The aim of the evaluation project is to identify substances and to evaluate products based on these substances.
